To many, pixel art reminds them of retro video games. Some may think of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras or the classic LucasArts adventure games. By the early 2000s however, game artists ditched the style for the new fangled 3D. Recently, though, we have seen a revival with many games playing on the nostalgia factor and creating fantastic games using the style. I love the low-fi aesthetic and have been creating images in it for years. Having a small canvas to play with really forces you to make every pixel count towards the overall image. This approach is now being used in web design, magazine editorials, and even advertising, so if you love the style you should see it around a lot more in the coming years. It was Brian Eno who said whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. Now we don’t have to use pixel art, we can now experiment and enjoy it’s unique qualities in our art, games, and animations.
